And so it begins...

Today was the first day of implementing my lessons for my Capstone project. My Capstone class is the last class of my post degree diploma in Math and Science Education. It has been a lot of fun! The focus for my Capstone is on Math Literacy. Like standard Literacy that primary teachers all know and love, I am focussing on Literacy in a mathematical sense. I have set up three main goals for the next month.
1. Math vocabulary- there will be specific vocabulary lessons, a Math word wall and the students will each make their own math Vocabulary booklets. Below is the start of our Word Wall. We began with the words Mathematician and Math Journal as those were the first two activities that we completed. We also have been discussing reasonableness in class so we added it as well.

2. Writing in Math - the students will each have math Journals for recording their thoughts and ideas about Math. We are going to keep these journals in large ziploc "Math Bags". These bags will also include our sharing partners list, our vocabulary booklets, cards and game pieces if needed.

3. Math Talk - putting our newly learned vocabulary to use through partner talks, group talks and class talks. Some of these Math Talks have been inspired by the book Number Talks by Sherry Parrish.
